Sean Bhaile - Maumeen Abbey

projects

The ruins of an early medieval abbey can be found within the graveyard at Sean Bhaile. Remains of the Monks living quarters are still visible as well as the shell of the abbey itself.
You can enter the abbey through a side gate set in the wall of the graveyard. There is a small harbour nearby which the Monks may have used. The doorway is set off centre in the west wall and has chambfered jambs and lentils. The east wall houses a tall round-headed window and an altar. It is not certain which Order was based here or to whom the abbey was dedicated.

Trá Bán Church

projects

In Trá Bháin at the entrance to Greatmans Bay you will find a late medieval Chapel, referred to as The Pilgrim's Church.
A chambfered pointed arch doorway leads you into the Chapel where you will find the remains of an altar. As is the tradition in early Christian Settlements the Chapel sits directly beside the sea, just above the high tide line. Beam holes in the north west and south west gables seem to imply that there may have been a loft here at some point.

The Well of the 7 Shadows / The Millennium Garden - Tir an Fhia Church.

projects

The Millennium Garden can be found around the Church in Tir an Fhia. Local people came together to raise the funds and undertook the work themselves. Comhairle Ceantar na nOileán was able to secure a small grant from Galway County Council to help with the project. It is designed to be a place of reflection on oneself as well as remembrance of the characteristics of the people of Connemara from by-gone times. It is hoped that visitors will gain an insight into the traditions and culture of our ancestors history.
The paintings on the Church walls depict religious stories and local folklore. While walking around the garden you will come upon the Well of the 7 Shadows, St Breandan's Castle and the Path of Deliverance. Each has religious and local significance; a guide book is available to explain each in depth. Prayer stones are placed along the way as are statues and stones depicting the 7 Deadly Sins and local stories.
Visitors with small children should be aware that there is a stream running through the garden as well as the Well itself. Therefore care should be taken.

Letter Mullen

Letter Mullen and Garumna Heritage Centre

projects

Local man John Bhaba Jeaic O'Confhaola has been collecting old books, photos and trinkets for many years. After displaying his vast collection at an exhibition it was decided that such a wealth of local history should be put on permanent display. The Lettermullen and Garumna Heritage Centre was opened for this purpose and has been very popular ever since.
As well as old photographs of people from the area, the centre is set up as a house would have looked "back in the day". Furniture, furnishings, tools and utensils are laid out in the manner that would have been normal at the time; packets in the glass cupboard are originals that John has sourced over the years to add to his collection. Books, newspapers and magazines have been collated on a database to enable people to find an article of interest quickly and easily, great for people trying to trace their roots or brushing up on history!

Cean Golaim Tower

projects

A Morello Tower can be seen from the shores of Caladh Golaim. Once used to raise the alarm in the event of raiders, it is a fine example of a tower. Set on its own private island, it is only accessible by boat. Another watch tower can be seen in Caladh Golaim, it was to this smaller tower that the signal would be sent warning of an impending threat.
